Bay and Bow Windows

Bay and bow windows are a beautiful addition to any home. Simply defined, bay windows are any window built out from the main walls of the structure. Most often they are made up of three windows, one larger window in the middle, flanked by two smaller windows angled out from the wall in 30, 45, 60 or 90 degrees. The glass of a typical bay window is flat, as opposed to bow windows that use curved glass, giving a more rounded look.  

The average bay and bow windows will add 2-3 feet of additional living space in the room. Remember you will need at least that much space on the outside to accommodate them and cities have various rules about how close to the property line bay windows can be. Homeowners should contact the City of Milwaukee for a permit and the City will explain any restrictions. 

The Victorian era feeling isn’t the only reason to install bay and bow windows. With a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, for example, a bay window will provide a larger view than the average flat window. The view outside the bay window becomes part of the room and it can feel a bit like you’re standing on the beach.  

Bay and bow windows will make a room feel larger and increase the flow of natural light throughout the room. Many bay windows have a built-in window seat, but they can also be completely open spaces.

The additional space provided could hold anything from furniture to plants and it promises to be a great place to read a good book, surrounded by natural light. 

The cost of bay and bow windows can be double or triple that of flat windows, but the gains in space and light may well be worth the additional investment.
